Nestled in the heart of the Bendigo region lies a rare and radiant piece of Australian flora – the Whirrakee Wattle (Acacia williamsonii). Known for its vibrant yellow blossoms and hardy resilience, this unique wattle species is more than just a beautiful plant – it’s a proud emblem of local identity, deeply rooted in the culture and natural heritage of Huntly and the surrounding districts.
A Local Treasure with Deep Roots
The Whirrakee Wattle is a small, bushy shrub, typically growing up to 2 metres high and 2–3 metres wide, with narrow, curved grey-green leaves. From August to September, it bursts into a spectacular display of bright yellow ball-shaped flowers, lighting up the landscape during the transition from winter to spring. After flowering, the plant forms slender green seed pods that ripen to a deep brown, eventually releasing hundreds of small black seeds.
While wattles are among the most iconic native plants in Australia, the Whirrakee Wattle is particularly special – it’s almost exclusively found in Bendigo, with its largest populations concentrated around Huntly in the Whipstick, Wellsford, and Kamarooka forests. In fact, it’s classified as rare in Victoria, making its presence in our region even more significant.
Preserving Nature at Viewpoint
At Viewpoint, we’re proud to be home to the Whirrakee Wattle. As Bendigo continues to grow, the Viewpoint Huntly Team is committed to protecting this rare species. Through thoughtful planning and sustainable development, we ensure that these native plants remain a vibrant part of the environment – for current and future generations to enjoy.
Celebrating Our Floral Icon
In 2013, renowned local sculptor Yvonne George created a 5-metre-high tribute to the Whirrakee Wattle – a striking artistic impression of a flowering sprig that now stands proudly along the Midland Highway. The sculpture serves not only as a celebration of the plant’s natural beauty, but also as a symbol of Huntly’s identity and a reminder of our community’s deep-rooted connection to the land.
Huntly: The Home of the Whirrakee Wattle
As a community, we embrace the Whirrakee Wattle not just as a native species, but as a symbol of local pride and resilience. Huntly is proud to be known as the “Home of the Whirrakee Wattle,” and here at Viewpoint, we’re honoured to help preserve and showcase this beautiful botanical icon.
Whether you’re walking the trails or exploring the parks, take a moment to admire the natural landscape a living tribute to the land we call home.
